YEARBOOKS ARE HERE! They will be handed out at lunch and after school ONLY in Room 34! There are extras available for $40 (first come, first served).

NHS Members: NHS - Today's meetings have been postponed until Thursday of next week. Please understand that you must attend at either 7:30 AM or 2:40 PM.

Spanish Club Members: Stop by Mrs. Grusecki's room TODAY and vote for next year's officers.

NHS Members Needed: Anyone wanting to help clean up the survivor luncheon (in the Community Center). Lap is at 12 noon, luncheon is following (1:00 p.m.) clean up will probably be at 1:30-2 p.m.

Spanish Club Relay for Life final meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 5th, during lunch in Mrs. Grusecki's room.

Spanish Club: Get your luminaria donations and your decorated bag to Mrs. Grusecki ASAP!

Do you have any prom pictures you would like to share with the yearbook staff? The yearbook staff is looking for more pictures to put in the spring supplement (an addition to the yearbook that contains all spring activities). Please see Mrs. Beckley in room #34 ASAP if you have pictures you would like to see in the yearbook.

Purchase a Relay for Life "foot" for $1.00 from Mrs. Grusecki or Mrs. Decker (Goddess of the Gym); the proceeds will benefit the YAC and Spanish Club Relay for Life teams. See the display case for any questions.

Sign up for Segment I Drivers Ed. in the Counseling Office. The cost is $250.00. See Mr. Smith if you are interested. Class begins June 11th.

Sign up for Segment II Drivers Ed. will begin next week, June 2nd, in the Counseling Office. The cost is $50.00. See Mr. Smith if you are interested. Classes will be held June 16th, 17th and 18th.

TUTORING: Tuesday mornings from 7:00 - 8:00 AM and Thursday afternoons from 2:35 - 3:35 PM, there will be an opportunity for students to have extra help with their homework and/or assignments with tutors in the art room. It is an open door and you don’t have to stay the full hour.

BUS PASS REQUESTS MUST BE WRITTEN (by a parent), turned in to the office BEFORE SCHOOL and must have the address and name of the bus. Passes requested before school can be picked up DURING LUNCH & AFTER SCHOOL ONLY.

IF YOU NEED TO LEAVE SCHOOL EARLY (for an appointment, etc.) please bring a note from your parents. Keep the note with you to show your teacher so you can get out of class. Turn the note in to the office when you sign out. THIS IS THE BEST WAY TO GET YOU OUT AND WHERE YOU NEED TO GO ON TIME. Also, if you have a note, please be sure to check out of class and be ready to go on time! It is your responsibility to watch the clock!

Good luck to Alex Revord, Eric Stec, Bill Schmidt and Jeff Janis as they travel to Comstock Park for the Division 3 Track and Field State Finals this weekend!

Attention Freshmen Girls: There will be a short meeting at lunch TODAY for JV girls basketball next year. Please be there as we are discussing the summer program.

The varsity girls’ basketball meeting is TODAY in Coach Stoll's room during lunch.

The Tawas golfers ended their season yesterday with a 4th place finish at the Regional Tournament in Perry, falling one shot shy of qualifying for the State Finals. Taylor Phillips led Tawas with an 82, followed by Anthony Knafla with an 84 and Bruce Myles with an 87.

The girls’ varsity soccer team defeated Elk Rapids in District Semi-finals last night with a score of 2-0. Scoring for the team was Asia Finnell and Alyssa Gracik each with 1 goal. Audrey Thoryk had 1 assist. Goalkeeper Molly Stoll had 12 saves and was credited with her 4th shut out of the year. The team is now 10-7-2. The team advances to District Finals at Roscommon on Saturday at 1:00 PM.

Seniors: The Counseling Office would like to know where you are headed in the fall…A four-year university? A two-year community college? Trade School, Armed Forces? A final transcript is required by your college or university so stop by and let us know where to send it.

Seniors: Did you take dual enrollment classes this past year? Contact the registrar’s office and have your transcript forwarded to the college or university you will be attending in the fall.

New Scholarship Listing! The Abate Region #16 Motorcycle Club out of Hale is offering a first time $500.00 scholarship to Tawas High School. Stop by the Counseling Office for more information. Application must be mailed in to address given by Saturday, May 31, 2008.

Joseph Barkman Scholarship applications are still available in the Counseling Office. It is offered to high school seniors and past graduates. Two reference letters are needed as well as reasons for applying and a statement about yourself. Deadline date to the Counseling Office is October 31, 2008. (Since many of you will have a very busy fall schedule it would be a good idea to hand this in before you graduate).

The girls’ varsity soccer team defeated Roscommon last night in the first game of Districts with a score of 4-0. Scoring for the Braves was Alyssa Gracik with three goals and Erica Jackson with one. Asia Finnell had two assists, Sarah Koroly had one and Audrey Thoryk had one. Molly Stoll was in goal for the first 70 minutes and had 12 saves. Carlie Baker was in goal for the final 10 minutes and had 2 saves. The team is now 9-7-2 overall and will advance to District Semi-finals in Roscommon versus Elk Rapids on Thursday at 5:00 PM.

The boys’ track team traveled to Roscommon last night for the Sunrise Meet of Champs. Thomas Domerese placed first in the pole vault with a vault of 12' 6". Also medaling were: Jeff Janis (200m - 2nd), Bill Schmidt (400m - 2nd), and Alex Revord (100m - 3rd). The 400m relay team of Janis, Revord, Schmidt, and Eric Stec also medaled finishing 2nd.

Attention Freshmen Girls: There will be a short meeting at lunch in room 40 for all girls interested in JV and freshmen basketball next year. If you cannot make the meeting, please stop by and see Coach Gorman.

There will be a girls’ varsity basketball meeting on Thursday at lunch in Coach Stoll's room.

Tawas JV softball beat Roscommon last Wednesday in both games. Game #1: Tawas 4, Roscommon 1 with the winning pitcher as Amber Hunt having 10 strikeouts. Leading hitters were Ariana Conklin with 1 double, single, and RBI, Sammy Smith, Callie Anderson, Caroline Weber, and Ann Marie Righetti each with one single, and Hanna Colombo with a RBI. Game #2: Tawas 10, Roscommon 3 with the winning pitcher, Ann Marie Righetti having 7 strike outs. Leading hitters were Hunt with 3 singles, Smith with 1 double, 2 singles, and a RBI, Colombo with 2 singles and a RBI, Weber and Conklin with 2 singles each, and Anderson with 1 RBI. Great season ladies with a over all record of 20-10, and conference of 14-3!

The varsity golf team finished one shot short of a district championship last week at Farwell, shooting a season-best 328 total. Bruce Myles was 5th place medalist with a team-low 78. Matt Flory and Alex Phillips both posted 82's. The second place finish was good enough to advance the team to Regionals next week at Perry.

$100 REWARD to anyone with information that leads to the recovery of a missing hard drive from the tech lab. This hard drive belongs to a student.

· May 29 - The last day library books are due. This is the seniors' last day of school and two last days cannot be programmed into the computer. Track athletes that are not competing at the NEMC final meet must get their uniforms turned in before the cookout on Wednesday.

The girls’ varsity soccer team traveled to Alpena and defeated the Wildcats last night with a score of 3-2. Scoring for the team were Asia Finnell with an assist from Andrea Fisher, Alyssa Gracik with an assist from Jenny Jacques and the game winning goal came from an unassisted shot from Jenny Jacques. Gina Gerow, Jordan Zimmer and Emelia Oslund played solid games at midfield and defense. Goalkeeper Molly Stoll had a solid performance with 14 saves. The team is now 8-7-2 overall and placed second in the NEMC behind John Glenn with a final conference record of 6-3-1.

The girls’ junior varsity soccer team traveled to Cheboygan and lost Thursday night by a score of 0-3. We had a difficult time mounting any consistent offensive threat. Carlie Baker played very well in the second half.

The girls’ varsity soccer team traveled to Cheboygan Thursday and suffered a 2-3 loss. One of the team’s goals was scored by Gina Gerow and the other by Alyssa Gracik with an assist from Jordan Zimmer. Goalkeeper Molly Stoll had 18 saves.


The varsity golf team finished 3rd in the Division 3 & 4 flight of the Gaylord Invitational on Friday. Bruce Myles was 5th place medalist with a season-low round of 77.

Tawas took second in their own varsity invitational tournament on Saturday, finishing with a 3-1 record on the day. Nikki Stein struck out 25 hitters on the day. Leading hitters for Tawas were Lyndsey Look with seven hits and four RBI; Rachel Adaline with a home run, five singles and six RBI; Christie Cooper with a double, four singles and four RBI; Jill Fountain with five hits and one RBI; Courtney McKenzie with a double, three singles and two RBI; and Nikki Stein and Michelle Revord with four hits and two RBI.

The girls track team finished 8th at the Regional meet on Sat. Winning medals & "All-Region" status were: Dana Kolnitys - 5th 100M & 4th 200M, Emily Short - 6th 1600M & 5th 3200M, Chelsea Smith - 8th 1600M & 5th 3200M, Chelsea Wojahn 7th 200M, Kendra Cooley - 8th Discus, Richelle Payea - 7th Long Jump. The 3200 Relay of Smith, Short, Brittany Combs, & Olivia Bolen finished 8th. The 400 relay of Amy Johnson, Wojahn, Katie Challenger, & Kolnitys finished 6th. The 800 relay of Johnson, Wojahn, Shelby Benoit, & Challenger finished 8th. The girls all did a great job! The team will travel to Ogemaw on Wed. for the NEMC final meet.

The boy's track team finished 8 out of 15 teams at the regional tack meet on Saturday. The 400m relay team of Alex Revord, Eric Stec, Bill Schmidt, and Jeff Janis finished second (45.08) and qualified for the state finals in Comstock Park on May 31st. Janis also qualified for the state finals in the 200m dash by placing second (23.20). Also earning all-regional medals were: Revord (100m), Seth Philpot (1600m and 3200), Schmidt (400m), Kyle Knapp (discus), Janis (long jump), Jacob McIntosh (pole vault), and the 800m relay team of Tyler Klenow, Revord, Stec, and Schmidt.

* * TODAY’S NEWS * *

Yesterday Tawas Knowledge Bowl brought home the 2nd place Trophy. This makes 5 years in a row that Tawas has finished in the top 2 places in the Knowledge Bowl competition. The final score was Tawas - 315, Roscommon - 435. This game was an hour long, with each quarter doubled in length. It was a fast moving game, with questions being answered in a rapid fire fashion. At one point Tawas came very close to catching up to Roscommon. On the team were captain J. D. Nordeen, Mitchel Spleet, Jason Kennedy, and Luke Adaline, with alternates Jacob Winn and Eric Wilk. Jacob played in the second half of the game. J. D. brought in the most points with 127, Jason came in second with 77 points. Mitchel was third with 57 points. Luke and Jacob tied with 27 points each.

The library will be closed during high school and junior high lunches on Tuesday, May 20th, because of cheerleader meetings. Students can still use the computers, but must work quietly.

Student Council has a meeting Thursday May 22 at Lunch. in Mrs. Mikulski's room. Please see Mrs. Mikulski or Mrs. Kosto is you can not make it. We will be voting for next years’ officers.

There will be an informational meeting about a non-school sponsored trip in 2010 to Costa Rica on Thursday, May 22nd, at 7:00 PM in room #29; see Mrs. Grusecki for any information.

The girls’ JV soccer team beat Standish last night by a score of 9-1. Scoring for Tawas were Sarah Koroly with 4 goals, Abby Myles with 2 goals, Hannah Johnston, Carlie Baker and Mindy Kloc each with one goal. Credited with assist were Audrey Thoryk with three, Sarah Koroly, Hannah Johnston each with one. Carlie Baker and Mindy Kloc shared duties in goal.

The girls’ varsity soccer team traveled to Standish and came away with a 1-1 tie last night after two overtime periods and 110 minutes of play. The Braves goal was scored by Emelia Oslund. Tawas dominated the game taking 44 shots and putting 30 on goal. Standish took 18 shots and put 16 on goal. Goalkeeper Molly Stoll had 15 saves.

The varsity golf team finished third at yesterday's Conference Championship Tourny at The Nightmare in West Branch. Bruce Myles led the way with an 81, while Matt Flory shot 84, Taylor Phillips 86 and Alex Phillips 87. The 3rd place finish means Tawas came in 2nd overall for the NEMC season. Matt Flory earned All-Conference 1st team honors for the season, while Alex Phillips and Taylor Phillips were named All-Conference honorable mention.

Yesterday, Tawas Knowledge Bowl won the Semi-Final game against Arenac-Eastern 195 to 170. This gives Tawas a 5-0 record. On the team were Captain J. D. Nordeen, Mitchel Spleet, Jason Kennedy, and Luke Adaline, with alternates Jacob Winn and Eric Wilk. Jacob played in the second half of the game. J. D. brought in the most points with 85. Mitchel came in second with 45 points; Jason was third with 35 points, and Luke and Jacob tied with 15 points each. Tawas goes up against Roscommon on Thursday for the Final Competition. The team will be the same students that played in the Semi-Finals.

Football players who did not attend the liftathon Saturday but raised money need to turn it in to Coach Webb TODAY!

The girl’s varsity soccer team traveled to Ogemaw last night and suffered a loss with a score of 0-1. Tawas dominated the game taking 27 shots and putting 17 on goal but was unable to find the back of the net. Ogemaw had 6 shots with all 6 on goal with one being the game winner. Goalkeeper Molly Stoll had 5 saves.


The girls track team took 2nd in the small school division at the Falcon 9/10 meet on Monday. Taking 1sts for the team were: Chelsea Smith (High Jump), Kendra Cooley (Discus & Shot Put), Richelle Payea (800), Dana Kolnitys 200M dash, & 400 relay (Katie Challenger, Kolnitys, Payea, & Chelsea Wojahn). The team had many 2nd & 3rd place finishes also, bringing home 25 medals.

The JV track team finished second in the small school division of the Falcon 9/10 Invitational last night. Multiple medal winners were: Jeremy Fuller (110m hurdles, 300m hurdles, and 400m relay), Eric Wilk (110m hurdles, 300m hurdles), Nolan Klenow (long jump, 400m relay), Josh Hunke (100m dash, 400m relay), and Talal Abdullah (400m dash, 800m run). Also medaling were: Nate Koenig (400m relay), Shane Fasbender (shot put), and Ben Enzenberger (high jump).

The JV softball team defeated Standish-Sterling last night in two awesome games. Game #1 was Tawas 4, Standish 3 with Amber Hunt pitching 6 strike outs. Leading hitters were Sammy Smith with 1 double and singe, Callie Anderson with 1 double and RBI, Hunt and Alex White with 2 singles each., and Caroline Weber and Jessica Engle each with a single. Game #2 was Tawas 8, Standish 6 with winning pitcher Annie Marie Righetti striking out 4 at the plate. Leading hitters were White with 1 triple and single, Hunt with 1 double, 2 singles, and 2 RBIs; Smith and Weber each with 2 singles and RBIS, Righetti with 2 singles, and Ariana Conklin and Engle with 1 single each; and Callie Anderson with 2 RBIS. Awesome games ladies!!!

The varsity softball team split a Northeast Michigan Conference doubleheader with Standish on Monday. Standish took the opener by the score of 1-0 and Tawas came back to take game two 5-2. Nikki Stein took the loss for the Braves in game one allowing one run on five hits. She struck out twelve and walked none. Leading hitters for Tawas were Katie LaHaye, Christie Cooper and Rachel Adaline with one hit each. Tawas took the second game by the score of 5-2. Leading hitters for Tawas in game two were Courtney McKenzie with two doubles and a single; Lyndsey Look with two hits; Michelle Revord and Katie LaHaye with one hit and one RBI each; and Jill Fountain and Christie Cooper with one hit each.


The JV baseball team lost a double header against Standish on Monday, May 12th, 5-3 and 5-4. Top hitters for Tawas were Seth Thomas and Tim Schmidt.

In two well pitched games last night the varsity baseball team lost two games to Standish. The score of the first game was 1-0 after going nine innings. The second game's score was also 1-0. Their record is now 12-8.

The girl’s varsity soccer team traveled to Mt. Pleasant Friday and came away with a 0-0 tie against the Lady Oilers. Tawas took 16 shots and put 12 on goal while Mt. Pleasant took 18 shots and had 14 on goal. Goalkeeper Molly Stoll had 14 saves.


The Tawas JV softball hosted an invitational this weekend. Tawas defeated Ogemaw B 13 – 5 and Gladwin 9 – 0 and lost to Standish 3-8. Ogemaw A won the tournament.

The varsity softball team had an 0-3 day at the Hemlock Tournament on Saturday losing to USA by the score of 5-0 in their first game; they dropped a 2-1 decision to Swan Valley in their second game and lost to Valley Lutheran 14-3 in their last game. Leading hitters on the day were Lyndsey Look and Michelle Revord with three hits each and Jill Fountain and Katie LaHaye with two hits each.

This weekend the varsity baseball team traveled to Whittemore and won the Whittemore Invitational Tournament for the third straight year. Tawas beat Saginaw Seminary Lutheran in the first game by a score of 11-4. In the championship game Tawas defeated Oscoda by a score of 15-5.

New Scholarship Listing! The Abate Region #16 Motorcycle Club out of Hale is offering a first time $500.00 scholarship to Tawas High School. Stop in the Counseling Office for information. Application must be mailed in to address given by Saturday, May 31, 2008.

Joseph Barkman Scholarship applications are still available in the Counseling Office. It is offered to high school seniors and past graduates. Two reference letters are needed as well as reasons for applying and a statement about yourself. Deadline date to the Counseling Office is October 31, 2008. (Since many of you will have a very busy fall schedule it would be a good idea to hand this in before you graduate).

YAC will be selling purple ribbons with blow pops for $1 TODAY for the American Cancer Society and our June Relay for Life. Please help support this cause and bring that extra dollar to school.

Spanish Club members, please see Mrs. Grusecki before May 16th about your catered lunch from Tony's Tacos.

The library will be closed all day Monday, May 12th.

Tawas Knowledge Bowl will be playing in the Semi-Finals on Tuesday, May 13, against Arenac-Eastern. On the team will be Captain J. D. Nordeen, Mitchel Spleet, Jason Kennedy, and Luke Adaline, with alternates Jacob Winn and Eric Wilk.

We are looking for a few good men! Yes, you heard that right! Are you man enough to join choir? Get that Fine Arts credit out of the way and at the same time, let your creativity out in positive way. We can always use more women also!! It isn't too late!!

IF YOU NEED TO LEAVE SCHOOL EARLY (for an appointment, etc.) please bring a note from your parents. Keep the note with you to show your teacher so you can get out of class. Turn the note in to the office when you sign out. THIS IS THE BEST WAY TO GET YOU OUT AND WHERE YOU NEED TO GO ON TIME. Also, if you have a note, please be sure to check out of class and be ready to go on time! It is your responsibility to watch the clock!

TUTORING: Tuesday mornings from 7:00 - 8:00 AM and Thursday afternoons from 2:35 - 3:35 PM, there will be an opportunity for students to have extra help with their homework and/or assignments with tutors in the art room. It is an open door and you don’t have to stay the full hour.

BUS PASS REQUESTS MUST BE WRITTEN (by a parent), turned in to the office BEFORE SCHOOL and must have the address and name of the bus. Passes requested before school can be picked up DURING LUNCH & AFTER SCHOOL ONLY.

There will be a boys’ varsity basketball meeting TODAY during lunch in Mr. Woelke's room.

Football players are to be at the gym at 11:30 AM this Saturday for the liftathon. Only two players have said they will not be able to make it so we are looking forward to a great turnout! See you Saturday!

The JV softball team played Oscoda last night. Game #1 17 – 5 winning pitcher was Ariana Conklin with 6 strike outs. Hitting results are Conklin with 1 double and 2 singles, Alex White with 3 singles, Hanna Columbo and Marisa Wetherwax with 2 singles each, and Amber Hunt, Sammy Smith, Annie Righetti, Callie Anderson, and Jessica Engle each with one single. Game #2 13 – 9, starting pitcher was Jessica Engle with 1 strike out and winning pitcher was Hunt with 9 strike outs. Leading hitters were Smith, Caroline Weber, Anderson, and Engle with 2 singles each and Hunt and White with one single each.

The varsity softball team swept a doubleheader from Oscoda on Thursday by scores of 15-5 and 4-0. Game one was a six inning mercy win for the Braves as Nikki Stein picked up the win allowing five runs (only three earned) on ten hits. She struck out five and walked none. Leading hitters for Tawas were Katie LaHaye with two singles, a triple and one RBI; Lyndsey with three hits; Michelle Revord with a double, triple and four RBI; Christie Cooper with two hits and three RBI; and Jill Fountain with two hits and two RBI. Tawas took the second game by the score of 4-0 as Stein picked up her fourteenth win of the season. Nikki allowed no runs on three hits while striking out six and walking two. Leading hitters for Tawas in game two were Cassie Bush with one hit and two RBI; Christie Cooper with one hit and one RBI; Katie LaHaye with a triple and Rachel Adaline and Jill Fountain with one hit each.

The varsity golf team won the Gold Division of the Ogemaw Invitational yesterday at West Branch country club. Matt Flory, Bruce Myles and Anthony Knafla were top ten medalists. Flory and Myles were low scorers with an 83 and 85 respectively.

The JV baseball team split a double header with Oscoda on Thursday, May 8th. In the first game Tawas won 13-0 and Oscoda won the second game, 8-2. Tawas's top hitters were Curtis Branham and Ryan McEwan.

The varsity baseball team improved their record to 10-6 this season by sweeping a double header yesterday versus Oscoda. The score of the first game was 10-3 and the second game was 6-3.

The girl’s varsity soccer team defeated Oscoda last night at home with a score of 6-1. Scoring for the team was Alyssa Gracik, Jenny Jacques and Ali Jungquist each with two. Assists were credited to Gina Gerow, Alyssa Gracik and Jenny Jacques. Goalkeeper Molly Stoll had 9 saves.
The girls track team lost to Ogemaw last night 61-75. Taking 1sts for the team were Sammi Duvall in the 100 hurdles, Emily Short in the 1600 M run, Richelle Payea in the 800 M, Chelsea Smith in the 3200 run, and 3 of our 4 relays.

The boy's track team lost to Ogemaw last night 101-36. Events winners were William Schmidt (400m - 55.6), Seth Philpot (3200m - 10:32), Jeff Janis (long jump - 18' 8"), and Thomas Domerese (pole vault - 12'). Also scoring were Eric Wilk (110 hurdles), Alex Revord (100m, 200m), Josh Hunke (100m), Philpot (1600m), Eric Stec (400m), Jeremy Fuller (300 hurdles), Ryan McArdle (discus), Domerese (long jump), and Jacob McIntosh (pole vault).

On Tuesday, the boy's track team traveled to AuGres. First place medalists were Ryan McArdle (discus - 131') and Thomas Domerese (pole vault - 11' 6"). Andrew Salway also medaled in the discus.
