* * TODAY’S NEWS * *

YAC will be selling purple ribbons with blow pops for $1 TODAY for the American Cancer Society and our June Relay for Life. Please help support this cause and bring that extra dollar to school.

Spanish Club members, please see Mrs. Grusecki before May 16th about your catered lunch from Tony's Tacos.

The library will be closed all day Monday, May 12th.

Tawas Knowledge Bowl will be playing in the Semi-Finals on Tuesday, May 13, against Arenac-Eastern. On the team will be Captain J. D. Nordeen, Mitchel Spleet, Jason Kennedy, and Luke Adaline, with alternates Jacob Winn and Eric Wilk.

We are looking for a few good men! Yes, you heard that right! Are you man enough to join choir? Get that Fine Arts credit out of the way and at the same time, let your creativity out in positive way. We can always use more women also!! It isn't too late!!

* * OTHER IMPORTANT NEWS * *

IF YOU NEED TO LEAVE SCHOOL EARLY (for an appointment, etc.) please bring a note from your parents. Keep the note with you to show your teacher so you can get out of class. Turn the note in to the office when you sign out. THIS IS THE BEST WAY TO GET YOU OUT AND WHERE YOU NEED TO GO ON TIME. Also, if you have a note, please be sure to check out of class and be ready to go on time! It is your responsibility to watch the clock!

TUTORING: Tuesday mornings from 7:00 - 8:00 AM and Thursday afternoons from 2:35 - 3:35 PM, there will be an opportunity for students to have extra help with their homework and/or assignments with tutors in the art room. It is an open door and you don’t have to stay the full hour.

BUS PASS REQUESTS MUST BE WRITTEN (by a parent), turned in to the office BEFORE SCHOOL and must have the address and name of the bus. Passes requested before school can be picked up DURING LUNCH & AFTER SCHOOL ONLY.

If you’re under 18 and have a job, you must have a WORK PERMIT! They are in the rack outside the high school office.

* * SENIORS * *

Senior Board Members: There will be a meeting at lunch today (Friday) for all board members in Mrs. LeClair's room at lunch. Please bring your lunch so we can get started ASAP.
The Josten’s Rep. delivered your graduation announcement orders last week. If you didn’t’ get your order yet, you can bring your payment to the office and pick it up there!

* * TONIGHT’S EVENTS * *

JV/VARSITY GIRLS’ SOCCER AT MT. PLEASANT AT 5:00 PM. Bus leaves at 2:00 PM.

* * SPORTS NEWS * *

There will be a boys’ varsity basketball meeting TODAY during lunch in Mr. Woelke's room.

Football players are to be at the gym at 11:30 AM this Saturday for the liftathon. Only two players have said they will not be able to make it so we are looking forward to a great turnout! See you Saturday!

The JV softball team played Oscoda last night. Game #1 17 – 5 winning pitcher was Ariana Conklin with 6 strike outs. Hitting results are Conklin with 1 double and 2 singles, Alex White with 3 singles, Hanna Columbo and Marisa Wetherwax with 2 singles each, and Amber Hunt, Sammy Smith, Annie Righetti, Callie Anderson, and Jessica Engle each with one single. Game #2 13 – 9, starting pitcher was Jessica Engle with 1 strike out and winning pitcher was Hunt with 9 strike outs. Leading hitters were Smith, Caroline Weber, Anderson, and Engle with 2 singles each and Hunt and White with one single each.

The varsity softball team swept a doubleheader from Oscoda on Thursday by scores of 15-5 and 4-0. Game one was a six inning mercy win for the Braves as Nikki Stein picked up the win allowing five runs (only three earned) on ten hits. She struck out five and walked none. Leading hitters for Tawas were Katie LaHaye with two singles, a triple and one RBI; Lyndsey with three hits; Michelle Revord with a double, triple and four RBI; Christie Cooper with two hits and three RBI; and Jill Fountain with two hits and two RBI. Tawas took the second game by the score of 4-0 as Stein picked up her fourteenth win of the season. Nikki allowed no runs on three hits while striking out six and walking two. Leading hitters for Tawas in game two were Cassie Bush with one hit and two RBI; Christie Cooper with one hit and one RBI; Katie LaHaye with a triple and Rachel Adaline and Jill Fountain with one hit each.

The varsity golf team won the Gold Division of the Ogemaw Invitational yesterday at West Branch country club. Matt Flory, Bruce Myles and Anthony Knafla were top ten medalists. Flory and Myles were low scorers with an 83 and 85 respectively.

The JV baseball team split a double header with Oscoda on Thursday, May 8th. In the first game Tawas won 13-0 and Oscoda won the second game, 8-2. Tawas's top hitters were Curtis Branham and Ryan McEwan.

The varsity baseball team improved their record to 10-6 this season by sweeping a double header yesterday versus Oscoda. The score of the first game was 10-3 and the second game was 6-3.

Track athletes need to turn your picture money in to Coach Owens ASAP!!!

* * COUNSELING OFFICE NEWS * *

Early deadline for the ACT registration is Friday, May 9th. Test date is June 14th.

* * SCHOLARSHIPS * *

Interested Seniors - Another scholarship opportunity! A $1,000.00 scholarship is being offered through the McDonald's Corp. of Tawas for one area high school senior. Stop in the Counseling Office for info. Deadline to the counseling office is Friday, May 9th.

New Scholarship Listing! The Abate Region #16 Motorcycle Club out of Hale is offering a first time $500.00 scholarship to Tawas High School. Stop in the Counseling Office for information. Application must be mailed in to address given by Saturday, May 31, 2008.

Joseph Barkman Scholarship applications are still available in the Counseling Office. It is offered to high school seniors and past graduates. Two reference letters are needed as well as reasons for applying and a statement about yourself. Deadline date to the Counseling Office is October 31, 2008. (Since many of you will have a very busy fall schedule it would be a good idea to hand this in before you graduate).
